The expiry of paper driving licenses; 150 150 Paul Davies

The expiry of paper driving licenses;

The expiry of paper driving licenses;

As of 8 June 2015, the paper element of UK driving licenses will be invalid and no longer issued by the DVLA. This is the paper counterpart to the photo card driving license. The paper counterpart exists as it displays information about your personal driving categories and any endorsements or penalty points you may have. However, this will no longer hold any legal status from June 2015.

Why is the paper license expiring?

It has been said that the paper license is expiring for a number of reasons;

–          Getting rid of needless bits of paper

–          Save money for the taxpayer

–          New and easy to use digital services will be available for motorists to check driving entitlements and endorsements

–          Saving time and enabling easier access to government services for motorists

What is replacing it?

Essentially, nothing is replacing the paper counterpart. The primary valid UK driving license will now be the photo card. However, paper licenses issued before the photo card was introduced in 1988 will remain valid and should NOT be destroyed. Photo cards will only replace these licenses if personal information needs to be updated.

What do paper license holders need to know?

Motorists who hold a paper counterpart AND a photo card – please destroy the paper element. This will no longer hold any legal status following 8 June 2015. Please keep the photo card license as this will remain valid.

Motorists who hold ONLY a paper license – paper licenses issued before the photo card was introduced in 1988 will remain valid. Please DO NOT destroy this. However, if you need to update any person information, such as name or address, please renew your license. You will then be given a photo card only. This can be done here: https://www.gov.uk/exchange-paper-driving-licence

The DVLA claim there will be no charge for changing an old license into the new, valid license. However, the new photo card does need to be renewed every 10 years at a cost of £20 each time. It is essential that ALL motorists have the new required and valid license. If caught without a valid license following 8 June 2015 you could face a £1,000 fine.

Where can I access the information on the paper element now?

Penalty points and other motorist endorsements cannot be found on the photo card license. Individuals who wish to check their personal driving entitlements and endorsements, including penalty points and the vehicles they are permitted to drive, can visit the DVLA’s free Driving License Service athttps://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence.

Next steps;

*Those who own the paper element and photo card licenses need to destroy the paper part as it no longer holds any legal status.

*Those who hold ONLY the paper element, should NOT be destroyed. These remain valid.

*Those who need to update any personal information on their license will be issued with a photo card only. https://www.gov.uk/exchange-paper-driving-licence

*Those who wish to check driving entitlements and endorsements can visit the DVLA’s free Driving License Service athttps://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence

Happy New Year 2015 from Arrow Driving Academy! 150 150 Paul Davies

Happy New Year 2015 from Arrow Driving Academy!

Happy New Year 2015 from Arrow Driving Academy!

Hello to all past and present students of Arrow Driving Academy and happy 2015!! What happened to 2014?!? J It seems to have passed in a blur but it was a fantastic year for Arrow and we would like to thank everyone who has helped us to achieve so much, especially our students and we would like to wish you all the very best for 2015.

So 2015 is upon us and with New Years Eve fading into the distance it is time for us to cast our eyes forward and consider what we want to achieve in 2015. For Arrow Driving Academy we are aiming to build on what we do best – instructing. Providing quality instruction to our students is our primary focus and with the new check tests coming in we are keen to take on board any new training standards and procedures and incorporate them into our lessons. I think that is what keeps this job fresh and motivating, it is the constant ability to learn from the experience of the job. It is great to pick something up and be able to implement it into lessons over the following weeks and months.

Being an instructor to me seems to be about multitasking and being able to adapt and both these skill sets come into play everyday when in the car instructing. As instructors we use these skills day to day even in our personal lives, the focus being instructor requires carries over and it is a brilliant asset to nurture. In previous roles I did not need to be as focused, or at least I was not required to sustain the levels of focus that instructing needs. It is a great skill to grow and develop and one we look forward nurture even more over the coming year. All this talk of development is aimed at one thing and that is upcoming training opportunities with Arrow Driving Academy. If you would like to become an ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) then contact us and we might just have the right ideas, inspiration and training that you are looking for!

For me 2015 will be about building on what have already achieved and to keep that openness to learning. As a driving school we are looking forward to 2015 and the challenges and opportunities it will bring. Thanks again for your continued support. More blogs will be posted soon so keep checking in. Keeping the momentum going is as key for us as it is our students so here is to 2015 and the unwritten script!

Driving lessons are a fantastic gift idea; it gives an individual the opportunity to start their lessons, which is another step to independence. As an instructor I love to drive and especially love to instruct. Driving has always held a fascination for me as it offers so much freedom; it is without doubt one of the best skills I have ever learned.  Driving is a skill more in demand than ever, from delivering goods and services to general logistics and getting around driving can be a very rewarding career as well as a personal mode of getting around.  Driving lessons are the first step to opening up the world in new ways.

So, Christmas is almost upon us again and lights and trees adorn many of the shops windows, after the madness of ‘black Friday’ it seems the traffic has not settled at all! This is often the case this time of year. For student drivers it can be a difficult time of year. From drivers in a rush, extra traffic and of course driving in the dark and/or bad weather conditions it can all ramp up how challenging the student finds the lesson. Never one to dwell on the negatives, we prefer to see the positives in any situation and driving at this time of year for a student can be a fantastic learning experience. What better way to learn than to have the security of an experienced and calm instructor alongside you when you face these conditions for the first few times? From an instructors point of view it throws up many opportunities to reinforce previous lessons or to introduce new concepts. All in all it is a brilliant time of year for student to learn to drive.

Well that’s it for another week, stay safe on the roads guys and please contact us if you have any questions at all.

We have built up our reputation by continually offering our students exceptional value for money and we aim to make this our best winter ever. We take great care in teaching our students to drive safely and focus on safe driving for life. With winter just around the corner and the clocks going back this weekend we thought we would focus this blog on safety considerations to make when it comes to winter driving.

Winter Driving

Although to date October and the start of November have been on the milder side we know that the colder weather is not too far away. Did you know the clocks going back coincide with increased collision rates? This is not as surprising as it sounds. With darker nights and in particular the ‘jump’ by 1hr toward darker evenings, it can catch drivers out.  When driving be sure to take into account the darker evenings.  From an instructing point of view it is a time to reassure students and reinforce what we teach especially when students first face driving in the dark.   Driving in a wide range of conditions is especially important for trainee drivers, better to face these new experiences with an instructor sat by their side. We take ever opportunity to reinforce safe driving techniques and the winter weather provides a fresh set of challenges for the more experienced students.

Driving News

Well I am confident in saying many of our students and future students are going to benefit from the reduced price Theory test which came into force in October (more details can be found here) and this is just the first drop in price with another scheduled for October 2015. Great news for our students!! We hope this helps spur the Theory training on.

Well that’s it for this week we are very appreciative of any feedback we receive and I want to thank you all for your continued support of Arrow Driving Academy.

DVLA News

It has been a very busy month for us and a huge month for the DVLA and the new Tax Disks rules and regulations which came into effect on October 1st. More details can be found right here. With these changes affecting a majority of road users, it is well worth reading up on. For those of us with many years vehicle use experience it will be strange not having the almost ubiquitous tax disk on show in the window. Still, it seems as though it will save on some of the administration costs of the DVLA which can’t be a bad thing! Lets hope the money gets pumped back into the maintenance and upgrading of the road system which would be of great benefit to all road users.

Well that’s it this week we hope that you guys are all safe and well. Have a fantastic weekend and take care.
