SHOW ME TELL ME

A comprehensive list of the potential questions that will be asked on the day…

If you’re looking for the ‘show me, tell me questions’ (also known as the vehicle safety questions) then you’ve come to the right place. Below are all the DVSA driving practical driving test questions and answers.

On your test day the examiner will ask you one ‘tell me’ question at the start of the driving test before you start driving, where you’d have to explain how you’d carry out a safety task.

You’ll also be asked one ‘show me’ question where you’d actually have to show them how you’d carry out a safety task while you’re driving. The show me question could be asked at any time during your driving test including the independent driving part.

If you’re unsure how to do it when driving on the test then the examiner will ask you to pull up on the left when it’s safe and convenient and ask you you to find the control. It’s a good idea to get familiar with where the controls are and how to use them before you try it when driving.

You won’t fail your driving test if you get any of the questions wrong but you would get one driving fault if you incorrectly answer one or both questions. You can get a serious or dangerous fault if you lose control of the car when answering the ‘show me’ question.

SHOW ME…

Here you will find a selection of questions that you may be asked on the day of your driving test.

Q. When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d switch on your dipped headlights?

Q. When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d set the rear demister?

Q. When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d operate the horn?

Q. When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d demist the front windscreen?

Q. When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d open and close the side window?

TELL ME…

Below you will find a selection of questions that you may be asked on the day of your driving test. Click each to open the correct response.

  • Brakes should be tested as you set off by applying gentle pressure at slow speed. Brakes should not feel spongy or slack and the vehicle should not pull to one side.

  • Recommended pressures can be found In the manufacturer’s guide. Use a reliable pressure gauge, check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold, don’t forget spare tyre, remember to refit valve caps.

  • Tyres should be checked to ensure there are no cuts or bulges. There should be 1.6mm of tread depth across the central ¾ of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference. This can be checked with a tyre depth guage or the depth markers in the tyres themselves.

  • Adjust the rigid part of the restraint so that it is close to the back of your head and level with your eyes or top of your ears.

  • Identify reservoir, check level against high and low markings.

  • Explain you’d operate the switch (turn on ignition if necessary), then walk round vehicle (as this is a ‘tell me’ question, you don’t need to physically check the lights).

  • Warning light should illuminate if there is a fault with the anti-lock braking system.

  • Explain you’d operate the switch (turn on ignition if necessary), and then walk round vehicle (as this is a ‘tell me’ question, you don’t need to physically check the lights).

  • Explain you’d operate the brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows or doors, or ask someone to help.

  • If the steering becomes heavy, the system may not be working properly. Before starting a journey, 2 simple checks can be made.

Gentle pressure on the steering wheel, maintained while the engine is started, should result in a slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate. Alternatively turning the steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assistance is functioning.

  • Operate switch (turn on dipped headlights and ignition if necessary). Check warning light is on. Explain use.

  • Operate switch (with ignition or engine on if necessary), check with main beam warning light.

  • Identify dipstick/oil level indicator, describe check of oil level against the minimum and maximum markers.

  • Identify high and low level markings on header tank where fitted or radiator filler cap, and describe how to top up to correct level.
