The importance of updating your records

It is suggested that as many as 7% of driving licenses in the UK have incorrect information, such as the wrong address or no indication of a medical condition, Direct Line estimates.

It is from such statistics that there has been a crackdown on updating your personal records on your license. As a result, anyone who fails to do so could end up being given a £1,000 fine.

Millions of drivers are therefore running the risk of not only facing such charges but breaking the law, for having outdates details on their drivers licences. These incorrect details can be flagged in a number of situations, such as hiring a car or being stopped by the police.

How do I update my details?

You do not need to worry about updating your records, as it is a very simple process. Simply visit and choose the appropriate link for your needs.

Changing your details is a free process, and you can still drive while you are replacing your licence. However, it is important that you update your details immediately, and even change them for temporary detail changes.

When do I need to change my details?

• Change of address – even if this is temporary, such as moving to University
• Changing your name – including after marriage
• Any medical conditions that can affect your ability to drive – including eye conditions, epilepsy, heart disease and diabetes.
• Update your photograph every ten years – this costs £20 and you should be reminded via the contact details you provided when the deadline is approaching.

If you fail to update these on your records, you are risking breaking the law and facing a £1,000 fine. We don’t think it’s worth it, do you?
